The article by Boris Mezhuev begins with the brief review on the book by historian Vassily Molodyakov “George Sylvester Vireck: more than one life. 1884-1962” that was published last year in Moscow. The book tells us about a prominent writer and journalist who worked as a propagandist of Germany in the United States before the World Wars. The author of the article pays special attention to the collaboration of Vireck with the members of the America First movement, or American anti-interventionsm which had a complicated history in the 20th century. Now the spokesmen of this movement can be seen as Russian allies, but the memory of the World War II seriously complicates our alliance. Due to this Molodyakov’s book is a valuable occasion for us to start a discussion of the people in the US who now and before stand for “America First”.
Статья Бориса Межуева начинается с краткой рецензии на вышедшую в 2015 году в Москве книгу историка Василия Молодякова «Джордж Сильвестр Вирек: больше чем одна жизнь. 1884-1962», в которой рассказывается об известном писателе и журналисте, пропагандисте Германии в США в период, предшествующий обеим мировым войнам. Автор статьи обращает особое внимание на взаимодействие Вирека с представителями американского антиинтервенционизма, идейного течения, имевшего особую и сложную судьбу в XX веке. Сегодня представители этого течения могут считаться союзниками России, но память о Второй мировой существенно осложняет наш союз. Поэтому книга Молодякова представляет существенную ценность как повод начать дискуссию о тех людях, для которых вчера и сегодня «Америка прежде всего». |
