Description The article examines personality, ideological platform and political activity of the U.S. Senator Rand Paul, who runs in the primaries of the Republican party within the 2015 2016 presidential election campaign. It contains an assessment of the rapid rise and similar fall of his public support. Senator Paul reflects interests of a rather significant, but isolated part of the American population, which supports limitation of government in domestic affairs as well as restraint in the foreign policy. The insufficiency of this social base for a successful presidential campaign fosters him to seek a balance between his ideological principles and securing wider social recognition. This dilemma creates controversies, which enable to identify limits of tolerance within the American society towards alternatives to the existing mainstream. The article contains four major parts, which cover personality of the candidate, his views on federal government role in national economy, his record of fighting for individual rights and foreign policy program. In conclusion, the author compares the views of Rand Paul, with the dominating public opinion and mainstream attitudes in the political establishment of the country.
Статья посвящена личности, идеологической платформе и политической деятельности кандидата на праймериз Республиканской партии в ходе президентской кампании 2015-2016 годов в США Рэнда Пола. В ней содержится попытка оценить причины быстрого взлета его популярности и последующего снижения общественной поддержки. Сенатор Пол остается выразителем существенной, но политически изолированной части американского населения, поддерживающей ограничение роли государства внутри страны и проведение более осторожного курса на международной арене. В этой связи он сталкивается с необходимостью совмещения идеологической принципиальности с привлечением поддержки широких общественных слоев. Порожденные этой дилеммой противоречия позволяют продемонстрировать пределы толерантности американской общественности к альтернативам сохраняющемуся политическому мейнстриму. Статья включает четыре раздела, в которых рассматриваются особенности личности кандидата, его взгляды на роль государства в экономике, опыт борьбы за индивидуальные права, внешнеполитическая программа. В заключении делается вывод о соотнесении позиций, отстаиваемых Рэндом Полом, с общественным мнением и взглядами политической элиты страны.
