Description The essay presents a definition of conservatism as a result of dialectic interaction between two opposite approaches, in fact, two conservatisms. One, ‘essentialist’ conservatism is based on a certain set of ideas (mainly Ancient Greek or Christian), and is stable in its philosophical commitments. The other conservatism, called ‘situational”,’ clearly defined by Huntington, represents a pragmatic attitude toward changes as such, giving preference to what really exists against what once a or might exist. The author shows that in the U.S., the situational approach clearly dominates in the influential neo-conservative movement. This leads to the unexpected result that the most influential type of American conservatism is committed to liberalism that has grown into a strong tradition in the U.S. After discussing innovative ‘hybrid’ definition of conservatism offered by Mikhail Remizov, the author turns to considering the attitude of two different types of American conservatism to nationalism and concludes his essay comparing Russian and American nationalism sub speciae of conservative ideas and practices.
Современный консерватизм рассматривается в настоящем эссе как результат диалектического взаимодействия между двумя различными и даже противоположными подходами - фактически двумя консерватизмами. Один консерватизм, «сущностный», предполагает приверженность определенному кругу идей (в основном древнегреческих и христианских) и не склонен менять свои философские позиции. Другой консерватизм, который может быть назван «ситуационным», представляет собой определенное прагматическое отношение к переменам как таковым. Ситуационный подход, в явном виде сформулированный С. Хантингтоном в 1957 году, отдает предпочтение тому, что есть в настоящий момент, по сравнению с тем, что было или могло бы быть. Автор показывает, что во влиятельном неоконсервативном движении в США доминирует именно ситуационный подход. Это приводит к тому неожиданному результату, что самый значимый из современных вариантов американского консерватизма в идейном плане оказывается привержен либерализму, который превратился в США в мощную традицию. После обсуждения «гибридного» определения консерватизма, представленного в работах М.В. Ремизова, автор обращается к рассмотрению отношения двух различных версий американского консерватизма к национализму и завершает эссе сравнением американского и русского национализма sub speciae консервативных идей и практик.
