The essay considers the nature of the opposition between two trends of American conservatism, namely, between the dominating since the early 1990s neoconservatives having money, contacts and influence in the Republican establishment, and paleoconservatives driven out by the former. According to the author the rhetoric and practices of neoconservatives are essentially radical, and that especially manifests in their call for a global democratic revolution and their attitude toward immigration and traditional moral values. Moreover, whereas the neoconservatives consider that the rest of the world desperately needs to follow in the steps of modern America, paleoconservatives by contrast long for the old days, before the country has turned into an ultra-left neoconservative paradise. The author also briefly discusses paleoconservatives’ attempts to offer new alternatives to neoconservative political philosophy, in particular, the ill-fated paleolibertarian project of the early 1990s and later identitarian politics and sociobiology.
В эссе рассматривается противостояние двух направлений в американском консерватизме, а именно, доминирующего с начала 1990-х годов неоконсерватизма, располагающего большими деньгами, связями и влиянием в республиканском истеблишменте, и гонимого им палеоконсерватизма. Риторика и практики неоконсерваторов, по оценке автора, являются по сути своей левыми, что в особенности проявляется в их призывах к глобальной демократической революции, а также в позиции по отношению к иммиграции и традиционным моральным ценностям. Более того, по мнению автора, в то время как неоконсерваторы считают, что весь остальной мир отчаянно нуждается в том, во что превратилась поздняя современная Америка, палеоконсерваторы, напротив, тоскуют по былым временам, когда она еще не стала левацко-неоконсервативным раем. Автор кратко рассматривает также попытки палеоконсерваторов предложить новые альтернативы неоконсервативной политической философии, в частности, неудачный палеолибертарианский проект начала 1990-х годов и более поздние идентитарианство и социобиологию. |
